"Blu-ray, proving to be home entertainment´s stand out performer in 2009, is accounting for 12 percent of all theatrical new release sales in the third quarter..."

Cubist commentary

Blu-ray is continuing to show strong growth in the home video market, performing well against both DVD and digital distribution. DVD revenue figures have declined, year-over-year while digital distribution has posted growth figures less than one third of Blu-ray's growth. Digital distribution is often cited as the creeping threat to Blu-ray, but it's clear from these numbers that people are still comfortable with physical media. As noted in this space before, Blu-ray's growth isn't fueled only by technology first adopters either. Bob Chapek, Chairman of the DEG and President of Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment notes that studios are beginning to see "...the same kind of response by mainstream audiences that we are seeing in early adopters." These are both signs that Blu-ray has found a place in the homes of American families and as HDTV penetration continues to grow, we expect that Blu-ray will continue the same upward trend, continuing to build on these numbers.
