It's easy to think of Blu-ray as the perfect medium to deliver the latest Hollywood blockbuster, packed with CGI and multi-channel sound effects. But there's a growing appreciation for how good black & white films can look in Blu-ray as well. As the market has matured, the interest level of the studios in digging into their archives for classic black & whites has grown, directly addressing the chorus of requests by cinephiles for great old films like Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon and It's a Wonderful Life, among others. It may be a few years yet before large numbers of the black & white classics are available, but in the meantime, its great to see a broader recognition of the benefits Blu-ray can bring to home entertainment.
