"Blu-ray Disc player household penetration is up to 12.3 million for the first quarter of 2009, a 71% gain year over year, according to new data..."

Cubist commentary

Of course, the headline is only the tip of the iceberg. Boutique market research firm Centris offers a few more glimpses of its overall research on its website (including this research note), but the message for Blu-ray industry watchers is clear. Blu-ray adoption is up, following (or perhaps leading?) adoption of HD TVs. Unlike DVD, which was a simple and quick upgrade to the average consumers SD TV set-up, to get the full benefit of Blu-ray, a HD TV is required. The additional research data, as reported on www.bluray.com, also notes that HD TV penetration was up by 33% over 1st quarter 2008 and while the absolute numbers show that every HD TV household is not a Blu-ray household, they're Blu-ray ready. They're one step closer....and with Christmas coming...this could be one big year for Blu-ray.
