Cubist commentary
We've all be wondering what effect of the weak economy has had on Blu-ray sales and the answer is in: they're up, and by a fair amount. Data from industry group Digital Entertainment Group, a consortium of some of the biggest companies in the Blu-ray world, reports a smaller, yet still quite healthy increase in player sales, up 25%. This report proves out our prediction that 2009 would be a big year for Blu-ray. As the economy improves, the numbers will only improve. Importantly, the pool of Blu-ray publishers continues to grow, as well. With the reduction in licensing fees, we've seen a number of new content holders dive into the market, including HIT Entertainment and Screen Media Films, demonstrating that the business case for Blu-ray has changed, drawing in a new tier of companies. We expect this trend will continue.
