"'You just want people to step into the pool and try it out,' said the retail source. 'Many people aren't aware of the Blu-ray experience. But once you start watching, you don't want to go back.'..."

Faced with a difficult economic environment, retailers are beginning discount Blu-ray titles. Much like the drop in player prices over the past two quarters, this may prove to be a real accelerator to the broader acceptance and penetration of the format. It's important to note, however, that the decrease in price comes from retailer margins: "Studios' wholesale charges to retailers...have mostly stayed the same since the format's 2006 launch." This reveals that producers are finding that the investment in people, equipment and materials required to become BD-development capable are not trending the same direction. We can reasonably expect, with DVD having paved the way, that BD's development costs will decrease at some point in the near future. However, with continued evolution of disc features and capabilities, across the industry, this day may not be as near as some might think.
