Super Bowl XLIII Highlights
In December 2008, NFL Films (Mt. Laurel, NJ) approached Cubist to develop a Blu-ray disc for Super Bowl XLIII featuring an instant highlights film of the Steelers’ entire season up to and including the big game.
As the project developed, several special features, including Post-Game highlights, Media Day highlights and profiles of key players and coaches were added.
In the run-up to the Super Bowl, Cubist menu designers and authors developed two work streams in order to move quickly once the game was over.
When the Steelers won, more special features including the HD Gamecast of the 4th quarter of 2008’s Week 14 (vs. the Cowboys), shorts on the Defense, and the Steelers Nation, the NFL’s most loyal and well-traveled fans, were to be included.
Cubist would have less than two weeks to achieve the optimal AVC encode, add the Dolby 5.1 surround and Dolby 2.0 Stereo tracks, author the disc and complete a thorough quality control review.
Even after Cubist shipped the master to the replicator, Cubist remained ready to address any issues.
However, final check disc testing by industry leader Check Disc Labs came back clean and NFL’s distributor, Warner Bros., approved the disc for replication the same day. On March 3, the Blu-ray Disc hit the street as an Amazon exclusive.
Cubist continues to partner with NFL Films and Warner Bros on additional projects, including the NFL: Pittsburgh Steelers Road to XLIII, which hit the streets on June 2, 2009.
For the first time on Blu-Ray, the original television broadcasts of
four Steelers victories are available
to own in high-definition. This double disc set includes 430 minutes of
1080i AVC-encoded programming
with 2.0 Dolby Stereo audio on two
BD-50s. Cubist-designed bonus features include a Super Bowl trivia track and a Playfinder function
allowing viewers to quickly jump to
the biggest plays in the game.
The disc also includes an alternate
play by play commentary track courtesy of WDVE-FM.
